Little Shop of Horrors - Directed by Tom Mackriell
An old favourite, you may have seen productions of Little Shop of Horrors over the years, or perhaps you saw the 1986 Frank Oz directed movie starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. Now, Thames Players’ Tom Mackriell is giving us his take on this black-comedy featuring a hapless shop assistant in a plant in love with a girl who’s boyfriend is a sadistic dentist. And then there’s a singing, man-eating plant from outer-space called Audrey 2.
Cast of Characters:
- Seymour Krelborn (male) - A menial laborer at Mushnik’s Flower Shop. The insecure, naive, put-upon, florists’s clerk hero. Above all, he is a sweet and well-meaning little man.
- Audrey (female) - The secret love of Seymour’s life. She works with Seymour at the flower shop. She lacks education and selfesteem, and she’s feeling pretty hopeless, especially as a result of her abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Orin Scrivello. She’s sweet and vulnerable.
- Mushnik - The owner and boss of Mushnik’s Flower Shop, a failing business on Skid Row. Mushnik is a person who seldom smiles and often yells.
- Orin Scrivello (male) - Audrey’s dentist boyfriend is a motorcycle-riding, black leather jacket wearing tough guy. He is handsome and sadistic.
- Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon (females) - Three “street urchins” who function as participants in the action and as “doo-wop” chorus girls outside it. They often sing directly to the audience in a narrative style. They, along with the ensemble, are the only people who really know what’s going on.
- Audrey II - The plant. It will take two actors to play this wise-cracking anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado with teeth. The first time we see Audrey II (named after Audrey), it is less than one foot tall. The last time we see it, it basically fills the room. The plant is played by puppeteers and an offstage vocalist with a microphone. The voice of the plant can be either male or female.
- Other Bit Parts include - Patrick Martin, Wino #1, Wino #2, Customer, Berstein, Mrs. Luce, and others. Depending on the number of people turning up to audition, these parts can be doubled up.
Performance dates 12th - 17th September 2023 (including a matinee on Saturday 16th)
