No Sex Please, We’re British is a riotous comic farce, written by Alistair Foot and Anthony Marriott, which notched up a staggeringly successful sixteen year run in the West End, totalling 6761 performances between 1971 and 1987. During the run leading parts were taken by Michael Crawford and David Jason along with many others.

The plot surrounds assistant bank manager, Peter Hunter and his new wife, Frances, who could reasonably expect to look forward to a calm, happy start to their married life together. When Frances innocently sends a mail order off for some Scandinavian glassware, what comes back is Scandinavian pornography. The two along with the bank’s frantic chief cashier, Brian Runnicles, must decide what to do with the veritable floods of pornography, photographs, books, films and eventually women that threaten to engulf this happy couple. The matter is considerably complicated by the presence of Eleanor, Peter’s mother, Mr Bromhead, his boss, Mr Needham, a visiting bank inspector and Vernon Paul, a police superintendent.

With frantic comings and goings, the action rises to a fever pitch of uncertainty and increasing panic, and makes this quintessentially British farce as much a delight to audiences today as it was throughout its sixteen year West End run.
